Since its inception in 1996, New Equine Wear (NEW) has specialised in equine leg protection and been at the forefront of technological development in the area.
After seeing his ex-wife’s horse sever a tendon while hunting and spend 15 months recovering, Englishman Richard Balfry decided to develop his first pair of equine protective boots.
A trained engineer, Mr Balfry relished the technical challenge of producing a lightweight boot that would be comfortable next to sensitive skin and able to protect the tendon from a direct strike.
After six months of development the final product was taken to the late, great racehorse trainer David Nicholson for testing on the horses at his yard. The results were impressive and the first iteration of the boots was launched in 1996.
In 1997, sales took off after Mr Mulligan, ridden by champion jockey AP McCoy, won the Cheltenham Gold Cup wearing a pair of New Equine Wear boots. The boots’ popularity received a further boost a few weeks later when Lord Gyllene won the Grand National in a pair of the company’s boots. Since then the boots have been embraced by equestrians worldwide, in particular eventers and racehorse trainers. NEW boots has worked with top eventers, including Mary King, Zara Phillips and Andrew Hoy, and supplied many national teams.

One of NEW’s most popular and technologically advanced products, the Airoflow Cross Country boot, is now available in Australia from Grosvenor Park Products. The boot features a ground-breaking design, offering a new dimension in leg cooling, protection and comfort for the horse.
